Mobile Phone Usability

In many countries, mobile phones now outnumber land-line telephones, with most adults and many children now owning mobile phones. Mobile handsets can be popular because of strong marketing, "street-cred" and stylish design, but to achieve long-term success and customer loyalty the device must be user-friendly.

Handheld Usability requires consideration of:

  • Ergonomics of keys & the whole device
  • Key discovery
  • Text input
  • Touch screen input
  • Speech input
  • Motion gestures
  • Display quality
  • Audio quality
  • User interface consistency
  • Information visualization

Is designing a mobile phone for a target audience such a strange idea? Global focus on mobile devices usability is needed to evaluate the software inside the device but also on the shell which encapsulates this amazing technology and functionality and its social use.

Providing a clear navigation structure within a mobile phone menu is only one aspect over the overall usability of a mobile device. A simple task can be made complicated and frustrating by the simple aspect of the keypad being too small for the user's fingers. There are many mobile phone users who have had the same phone for years just because they know how it works, it fits their needs and enables them to feel in control of achieving their goal.
